A materials recovery facility (MRF) is the plant where dry mixed recycling is sorted into separate materials: screens, magnets, optical sorters and people pull out cardboard, paper, plastics, steel and aluminium so each can be sold to a reprocessor. Contaminated loads are rejected there and sent to general waste.
