Commercial Waste Collection and Recycling for London Businesses

Anything a business produces in the course of trading is commercial waste, from till rolls and packaging to shop-floor sweepings. It’s a legal category under the Environmental Protection Act 1990, and it can’t go into household bins or a council tip as if it were domestic waste.

Every London business has a duty of care for its waste under section 34 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990: store it safely, use a licensed carrier and keep Waste Transfer Notes. A collection arrangement is how almost every business meets that duty, and enforcement officers can ask for the paperwork at any time.

Dry mixed recycling, or DMR, is the recyclable stream: paper, card, plastics and cans collected together, kept dry and free of food. It’s priced separately from general waste, and it’s the stream most London businesses now run to meet the Simpler Recycling rules.

Private carriers exist because businesses often want tighter scheduling, bag collections where the borough only offers bins, or one invoice across several streams. Yes. Plenty of London accounts run a bin for general waste with recycling in bags, or bags at one site and bins at another. It’s one agreement and one invoice either way.

Either each business holds its own agreement with labelled containers, or the landlord holds one contract for the whole building. Where the bin store is shared, your containers are labelled so the service is billed to your account rather than the building’s.

You are, unless you can show you used a licensed carrier and hold the Waste Transfer Note for the load. The duty of care follows the producer, and London councils prosecute on it. Check the carrier’s licence, keep the note, and the trail protects you.

The duty of care applies at any volume; a nail bar’s one bag a week is commercial waste just as a restaurant’s nightly six are. Low-volume businesses usually take a small weekly bag collection, which is also the cheapest way to stay compliant.

Only if you register as a carrier of your own waste and use sites that accept trade waste, which London’s household recycling centres generally don’t. Most businesses that try it end up paying trade gate fees plus their own time, and the duty of care paperwork still applies.

Because a quote reflects the provider’s disposal costs, how dense their rounds are, and the contract small print. A low headline rate often recovers its margin in rental fees, surcharges or fees for changing anything. Compare the invoiced total for your realistic volume, not the headline number.

Four things: the carrier’s licence on the public Environment Agency register, whether Waste Transfer Notes come as standard, the notice terms, and which fees sit outside the headline rate. A carrier worth signing with answers all four in writing without being chased.

It shouldn’t. The usual pattern is to line the start date up against your current contract’s end, so the new schedule begins the week the old one stops. The agreement, containers and Waste Transfer Note are all sorted before that first week.

Someone who can actually price the job reads it, checks your postcode against existing rounds, and comes back with a fixed rate and any access questions. If the rate works, the agreement and Waste Transfer Note follow, and most collections start within 24–48 hours.

Get the quote while you’re still fitting out; the licence checks and agreement can all be done before you trade. Containers arrive before opening and the first collection lands in your first trading week. The fit-out waste itself is a separate one-off clearance, priced per load.

Since 31 March 2025, workplaces in England with 10 or more full-time-equivalent employees must separate recycling from general waste, and smaller businesses follow in 2027. For most London premises that means running DMR alongside general waste, so an account with both streams already meets the requirement.

Yes, and it’s often the cleanest setup: one agreement in the agent’s or freeholder’s name, scheduled collections for the building, and the cost recharged through the service charge. Tenants get the compliance trail without each signing a contract.

The schedule around bank holidays is agreed with you in advance; where a round moves, it moves by a day rather than skipping the week. If your trading peaks over a holiday weekend, an extra collection can be added for that week.
