Is cardboard allowed in the recycling bin?

Cardboard in the recycling bin: an open 1100 litre bin filled with flattened cardboard

Yes, cardboard is allowed in the recycling bin as long as it is clean, dry and flattened. Boxes, cartons, packaging inserts and corrugated sheet all go in a dry mixed recycling bin or sack with the paper, plastics and cans, and are pulled out again at the sorting plant. Keep out cardboard with food on it, such as a pizza box base, and anything waxed, laminated or soaked, which goes in general waste. Flatten boxes first: a bin full of unflattened boxes is mostly air and fills in a day. A shop or stockroom that produces more cardboard than anything else is usually better served by a dedicated cardboard bin on the same round.
