How do I get rid of a sofa?

Getting rid of a sofa: a sofa, a mattress and a sink unit loaded in a tipper in Brixton Hill

You get rid of a sofa through a council bulky collection, a charity that collects furniture, or a licensed waste carrier; it cannot go in a bin, and a sofa on the pavement is fly-tipping. Which route works depends on the fire label. A labelled sofa in good condition can be reused, and charities collect free. A sofa without a label, or one that is torn or stained, is waste, and since 2023 waste upholstered seating in England must be incinerated under the POPs rules, so it cannot be sold on or recycled for its foam. That is why a sofa costs more to dispose of. A bulky collection takes it in one visit, with the paperwork.
