What are the new bin rules for 2027?

The new bin rules for 2027 are the last stage of Simpler Recycling in England: from 31 March 2027, every workplace with fewer than 10 full-time-equivalent staff must keep dry recyclables (plastic, metal, glass, paper and card), food waste and general waste in separate bins or sacks for collection. Larger workplaces have had to do this since 31 March 2025, so 2027 is the year the rule reaches the corner shop and the salon. The other change due in 2027 is the deposit return scheme, planned for October, which puts a deposit on plastic bottles and cans and will pull some of them out of business recycling bins. Sort the bins before March; the Environment Agency enforces with compliance notices.
