What is classed as hazardous waste?
Hazardous waste is waste with a property that makes it harmful to people or the environment: flammable, toxic, corrosive, infectious or ecotoxic. The List of Waste marks every hazardous entry with an asterisk. Common examples from business premises: asbestos, solvents and paint thinners, oil-based paint, used engine oil, lead-acid and lithium batteries, fluorescent tubes and energy-saving bulbs, fridges and air-conditioning units (refrigerant gas), pesticides, some cleaning chemicals, and infectious clinical waste. It cannot go in a general waste bin or sack, needs a hazardous waste consignment note rather than a transfer note, and must go to a site permitted to take it. We do not carry hazardous waste; we can refer you to one of our partners.
