What is the landfill tax rate per tonne?

The landfill tax rate is £130.75 a tonne at the standard rate from 1 April 2026, up from £126.15 the year before. The lower rate, for inert waste such as soil, rubble and concrete, is £8.65 a tonne from 1 April 2026, up from £4.05. The tax is charged to the landfill operator on every tonne it takes in and passed down the chain to whoever produced the waste, so it sits inside every general waste price in the country. It is also the reason most general waste in London now goes to energy recovery rather than landfill, and why a separated recycling or food stream costs less to collect than mixed rubbish. The rates usually rise each April.
