Anaerobic digestion (AD) is the treatment that breaks food waste down in sealed tanks without oxygen. Bacteria turn it into biogas, which is burned for electricity or cleaned into fuel, and digestate, which goes on farmland as fertiliser. It is where a separately collected food bin ends up, and the reason food must be kept out of general waste.
