A transfer station is a permitted site where collection vehicles unload. Waste is weighed, bulked and sorted there before it moves on in larger loads to a recycling plant, an energy-from-waste facility, an anaerobic digester or landfill. Collectors pay a gate fee by the tonne, which is the biggest cost behind any waste price.
