What is the fine for fly-tipping?
The fine for fly-tipping in England is a fixed penalty of up to £1,000 from the council; the limit went up from £400 in July 2023. A prosecution is worse: fly-tipping is an offence under section 33 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990, with an unlimited fine and up to five years in prison in the Crown Court. The vehicle used can be seized. A business is exposed even if it never dumped anything: if a cheap, unregistered collector tips your waste in a lay-by, you can be prosecuted for breaching your duty of care. Check the carrier's registration on the public register and keep the waste transfer note for every load.
