Is it illegal to dump rubbish on your own land?

Dumping rubbish on your own land: broken sofas, a mattress and boards piled in a fenced back garden

Yes, it is illegal to dump rubbish on your own land unless it has an environmental permit or a registered exemption. Owning the land does not give you the right to store, bury or burn waste on it; depositing controlled waste on land without a permit is the same section 33 offence as fly-tipping, whoever owns the field. Small-scale storage of your own waste before collection is fine, which is what a bin store or a skip on your yard is. Burning business waste on site is also an offence. If a pile of waste has built up on your own premises, the lawful route is a registered carrier and a transfer note for the load.
