What is classed as food waste for collection?

Food waste for collection: a container full of spoiled tomatoes and vegetables in Earlsfield

Food waste for collection is anything that was food or came from preparing it: plate scrapings, kitchen prep trimmings, peelings, bones, eggshells, out-of-date stock, coffee grounds, tea bags and leftovers, cooked or raw, meat or vegetable. It goes in the food bin loose or in a liner your collector accepts, and from there to anaerobic digestion. Not food waste for collection: packaging of any kind, liquids and cooking oil, which are collected separately, and garden waste. Under Simpler Recycling a workplace in England with 10 or more full-time-equivalent staff must keep it separate from general waste, and smaller ones must from 31 March 2027. We collect it in sealed 110 litre bins, bagged inside.
